Recently, NS Bluescope Vietnam – a member of BlueScope Group (Australia) and a leading manufacturer of pre-painted steel in the Asia-Pacific region – selected ESEC as its implementation partner for the “Furnace Control System Upgrade” project at its steel manufacturing plant in Ba Ria – Vung Tau.
Customer Challenges
The existing furnace control system at NS Bluescope had been operating for many years using aging DCS hardware, leading to several issues:
- Outdated technology that made integration with modern systems difficult.
- Challenges in maintenance and hardware replacement, as older components were being phased out.
- Operational risks and reduced system reliability, potentially causing disruptions in production.
ESEC’s Comprehensive Upgrade Solution
After thoroughly assessing the existing system, ESEC designed and delivered a complete DCS upgrade solution, including:
- Replacing all existing DCS hardware, including FCS and I/O modules, with the latest-generation equipment from Yokogawa.
- Upgrading the control network infrastructure, adopting the Vnet/IP protocol over an industrial Ethernet platform (including Layer 2 switches, cables, and accessories).
- Upgrading the operation and monitoring system (ENG/HIS) to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2019 LTSC 64-bit, ensuring performance, security, and long-term compatibility.
Project Outcomes
The project was successfully implemented and brought tangible benefits to NS Bluescope:
- Modernized and synchronized hardware and software, improving furnace operation and monitoring efficiency.
- Access to the most advanced DCS technology from Yokogawa, ready for future integration and expansion.
- Simplified maintenance, upgrade, and troubleshooting, thanks to an open and standardized control infrastructure.
